WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today released the following statement on the passing of former Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer:
"I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mayor Eugene Sawyer, whose dedicated public service and thoughtful leadership guided the City of Chicago through troubled and turbulent times.
"For sixteen years, Eugene fought for people at the local level as an alderman of the 6th ward, before answering his government's call to service to become Chicago's caretaker. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to his family."
